Daman and Diu

About Daman and Diu

Daman and Diu are two small enclaves in Western India. Daman is a small city on the mouth of the Daman Ganga river bounded on all sides by the state of Gujarat, while Diu is a small island off the coast of Gujarat. The two enclaves, along with Goa and Dadra and Nagar Haveli, were under Portuguese rule from 1539 to 1961, when the Indian government used military action to retake them. This area used to be a part of a larger union territory of Goa, Daman and Diu till Goa became a state by itself.
